This project is a collaboration between the University of the Philippines National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UP NIH-NIMBB) and the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Animal Industry (DA-BAI). The UP NIH-NIMBB will receive genomic materials extracted from frozen swine blood and organ samples from BAI that have tested positive for African swine fever (ASF) via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The extracted DNA samples will be used for whole-genome sequencing of African swine fever virus (ASFV), while the extracted RNA samples will be utilized for viral metagenomics. Through this project, we aim to investigate the molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic characterization of ASFV from local Philippine outbreaks, identify their geographic distribution, and to further understand the microbial profile of ASFV-infected local swine in an effort to supply relevant information on the existing strains in the country.
