Plant viruses maintain intricate interactions with their vector/or non-vector insects, and can impact fitness of insects. The Schizaphis graminum is a vector of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus GAV strains (BYDV-GAV) and non-vector of wheat dwarf virus (WDV, transmitted by the leafhopper Psammotettix alienus (Dahlbom)). The Rhopalosiphum padi is the non-vector of neither BYDV nor WDV. The vector treatment was defined as Schizaphis graminum fed on BYDV-infected wheat (Sg-BYDV), the non-vector treatment was defined as Schizaphis graminum fed on WDV-infected wheat and Rhopalosiphum padi fed on BYDV-GAV-infected, WDV-infected wheat (Sg-WDV, Rp-BYDV, Rp-WDV). In this study, we investigated the transcriptome-level responses associate with the wheat viruses (BYDV-GAV and WDV) infection in S.graminum and R. padi using an Illumina HiSeq sequencing platform.
