Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is an emerging Gram-negative bacterial pathogen that causes multiple infections primarily in immunocompromised patients. Mortality rates can reach 65% and many isolates are multidrug-resistant. S. maltophilia is found in many natural environments but also contaminates hospital surfaces.
