Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar typhimurium strain LT2. This strain was first isolated in the 1940s by Lilleengen, and typed based on phage sensitivity. It became the principle laboratory strain and many important biochemical and genetic experiments were performed using this strain, including classical phage transduction studies. LT2 contains a plasmid, pSLT, that encodes additional virulence functions.
