T. castaneum is noted as a sophisticated genetic model organism, which played a role in its selection as a high priority organism for genome sequencing by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Proposing its utility as an additional link between insects and humans, especially when human/fruit fly comparisons are non-informative, the red flour beetle genome represents a useful reagent for comparative genomics.
Whole genome shotgun sequence and assembly for the estimated 200 Mb genome of Tribolium castaneum was undertaken at Baylor College of Medicine. The genome was sequenced to 7.3-fold coverage and assembled using Atlas. The T. castaneum whole genome shotgun (WGS) project has the project accession AAJJ00000000. This version of the project (01) has the accession number AAJJ01000000, and consists of sequences AAJJ01000001-AAJJ01009708. The contigs have been assembled into 10 linkage groups (accessions CM000276-CM000285), with the remaining sequence represented as unplaced scaffolds (accessions DS497665-DS497969) and unplaced singletons (GG694051-GG695898).
