Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus Z-245 is a thermophilic methanogenic archaeon. It grows anaerobically using hydrogen and carbon dioxide or formate as substrates. It was first isolated from manure in the former USSR around 1984 (Zhilina & Ilarionov, 1984). This strain also contains the plasmid, pFZ1 (Noelling, et al., 1991).
