The vaquita is the smallest porpoise, endemic to the upper Gulf of California, Mexico. The species is critically endangered, with fewer than 30 individuals estimated to remain in 2017. The sample was collected during an attempted capture to begin a captive breeding program, resulting in death of the adult female V02F. Tissue samples were collected during necropsy, and cells were cultured at the Institute for Conservation Research, San Diego Zoo. A portion of the cells have been used to generate a chromosomal-level reference assembly as part of the G10K-VGP Project.
