Dickeya zeae strain EC2 is a newly found pathogen infecting rice in Guangdong, China. Strain EC2 has many different characters from previously well-identified strain EC1 in Guangdong, China, including culture characters, biochemical characters and genome components. In the phylogenetic analysis, this newly emerging strain was distinct to those previously reported rice strains, which consisted of a close group. The purpose of this study is to sequence the whole genome of this novel strain and explore the genomic traits differing from the previously reported rice strains, thus help to understand their bacterial differentiation and evolvement.
