isolation and growth conditionPrimary clinical specimens collected from multiple ocular infection sites were obtained by the attending ophthalmologist or resident following institutional guidelines and submitted to the clinical microbiology laboratory for processing. Suspected S. pneumoniae colonies were identified using the MicroScan WalkAway system (Beckman Coulter, Brea, CA) following the manufactures protocol. Isolates were stored at -80C in Microbank cryopreservative tubes (ProLab Diagnostics). Frozen isolates were cultured on 5% sheep blood agar plates (BD Biosciences, San Jose, CA) and incubated at 37C with 5% CO2.
