AB1157 was isolated in the lab of Edward A. Adelberg, and became the reference strain for Paul Howard-Flanders genetic studies of DNA replication, damage, and repair. An early pioneer in DNA studies, Howard-Flanders favored the strain for its lack of prophage induction and consequent genetic stability under elevated levels of genotoxic stress. To date, AB1157 is still frequently employed as an E. coli reference strain by researchers worldwide.
