Bacillus megaterium is the main model organism among gram-positive bacteria for intensive studies on biochemistry, sporulation, and bacteriophages. It is a common soil bacterium and an endophyte as a potential agent for the biocontrol of plant diseases. Our study suggested that the strain Y11 of Bacillus megaterium collected in Ningxia, China can significantly increase the tolerance and growth of maize under salt stress conditions. The mechanisms of salt stress relief might be based on the regulation of substance metabolism, ion balance and antioxidant metabolism. The Y11 has the great potential in the maize production in the saline soils.
