host descriptionPatient presented with shortness of breath and hemoptysis secondary to multifocal staphylococcal pneumonia. Patient clinical course was complicated by concomitant staphylococcal bacteremia, acute hypoxic respiratory failure requiring intubation and empyema. Computed tomography revealed multiple loculations consistent with pleural abscesses and left lobular nodules consistent with septic pulmonary emboli. Patient demonstrated significant functional improvement following abscess drainage and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was not pursued. Patient was managed medically with vancomycin monotherapy advanced to daptomycin plus ceftaroline and consolidated back to vancomycin monotherapy prior to discharge in stable condition to a skilled nursing facility. Duration of bacteremia: 5 days.
