Description: Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1, serotype Ogawa The Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) was first notified of a cluster of patients with acute watery diarrhea and dehydration on October 19, 2010. Cholera was confirmed several days later. By November 13, 2010, MSPP had reported 16,111 persons hospitalized with acute watery diarrhea and 992 cholera deaths. More information can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/PDF/wk/mm5945.pdf. This isolate was recovered from an early case of cholera from the Artibonite Department in Haiti during the 2010 outbreak. A whole genome shotgun sequence has been uploaded to GenBank. The strain matches other outbreak isolates from Haiti by PFGE, cholera toxin sequence-type, and susceptibility profile. It is susceptible to tetracycline (a proxy for doxycycline) and azithromycin, but resistant to sulfisoxazole nalidixic acid, and furazolidone, and has reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin.
