Definition
The organization and analysis of biological and related information, usually involving the use of computers to develop databases, retrieval mechanisms, and data analysis tools, especially in the fields of molecular biology, structural biology, and genetics (adapted from Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary. 29th ed. Scope and emphasis
NLM is interested in applications of bioinformatics to biomedical research and the fundamental biological sciences. The Library collects works in environmental, industrial or agricultural research only as applied to biomedicine.
