Scc2 Is a Potent Activator of Cohesin's ATPase that Promotes Loading by Binding Scc1 without Pds5

(Submitter supplied) In addition to sharing with condensin an ability to organize DNA into chromatids, cohesin regulates enhancer-promoter interactions and confers sister chromatid cohesion. Association with chromosomes is regulated by hook-shaped HEAT repeat proteins that Associate With its Kleisin (Scc1) subunit (HAWKs), namely Scc3, Pds5, and Scc2. Unlike Pds5, Scc2 is not a stable cohesin constituent but, as shown here, transiently displaces Pds5 during loading. more...

Dual RNA-sequencing of host and pathogen during Plasmodium berghei infection of hepatocytes in vitro

(Submitter supplied) We report the dual RNA-sequencing of host and pathogen transcriptomes during Plasmodium berghei liver-stage development in vitro. Unlike traditional transcriptomic approaches that analyze RNA reads separately from host and pathogen, a dual-approach maps the mixed reads to each annotated genome within samples of pathogen-infected host cells. This is a powerful method, as host and pathogen transcriptomes can be analyzed simultaneously. more...

Whole transcriptomic screening the RNA from control (O), photon radiotherapy (X) and proton therapy (P) tumors

(Submitter supplied) The general purpose of the experiment is to compare the therapeutic effect of photon (X) radiotherapy versus proton (P) therapy for head and neck carcinoma. For that purpose we have generated cells that have resisted to multi irradiations by X or P. We have then injected these human cells in nude mice. Whereas these cells proliferate less than the control (0, non-irradiated cells) in vitro, they formed bigger tumors in mice compared to 0 cells. more...

Urban waterways microbial communities (Affymetrix)

(Submitter supplied) The increased urban pressures are often associated with specialization of microbial communities. Microbial communities being a critical player in the geochemical processes, makes it important to identify key environmental parameters that influence the community structure and its function. In this proect we study the influence of land use type and environmental parameters on the structure and function of microbial communities. more...

Effects of TiO2 and Ag nanoparticles on polyhydroxybutyrate biosynthesis by activated sludge bacteria

(Submitter supplied) Manufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) are increasingly incorporated into consumer products that are disposed into sewage. In wastewater treatment, MNMs adsorb to activated sludge biomass where they may impact biological wastewater treatment performance, including nutrient removal. Here, we studied MNM effects on bacterial polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), specifically polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), biosynthesis because of its importance to enhanced biological phosphorus (P) removal (EBPR). more...

Comparing bacterial community composition of healthy and dark-spot-affected Siderastrea siderea in Florida and the Caribbean.

(Submitter supplied) Coral disease is one of the major causes of reef degradation and therefore of concern to management and conservation efforts. Dark Spot Syndrome (DSS) was described in the early 1990’s as brown or purple amorphous areas of tissue on a coral and has since become one of the most prevalent diseases reported on Caribbean reefs. It has been identified in a number of coral species, but there is debate as to whether it is in fact the same disease in different corals. more...

PhyloChip-based characterization of wastewater reactors

(Submitter supplied) We developed a laboratory-scale model to improve our understanding and capacity to assess the biological risks of genetically engineered bacteria and their genetic elements in the natural environment. Our hypothetical scenario concerns an industrial bioreactor failure resulting in the introduction of genetically engineered bacteria to a downstream municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP). As the first step towards developing a model for this scenario, we sampled microbial communities from the aeration basin of a MWWTP at three seasonal time points. more...
