Transcriptional profile of Salmonella enterica serovars Kentucky and Enteritidis in response to acidic conditions

(Submitter supplied) S. enterica sv Kentucky 3795 and S. enterica sv Enteritidis NalR were grown to mid-log phase in TSB, then subjected to three different acidic conditions generated by two different acids: HCl to pH4.5, HCl to pH5.5 and CH3COOH to pH5.5. After 10min, total RNA was harvested und compared to total RNA harvested from identical control cultures grown in TSB without the pH alteration.

Probiotic-induced differential gene expression during Salmonella challenge in neonatal chicks

(Submitter supplied) Salmonella remains an important enteric pathogen of poultry, primarily due to concerns regarding food-borne illness in humans consuming contaminated poultry products. Specific probiotic cultures are efficacious as a treatment for neonatal poultry to prevent enteric infections (competitive exclusion) due to the exquisite susceptibility of young chicks to pathogens in the hatchery and brooding environment. more...

Transcriptional Sequencing Uncovers Survival Mechanisms of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis in Antibacterial Egg White

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: To elucidated key metabolic pathways important for S. Enteritidis survival in egg white. Methods: RNA sample of Mid-log phase bacteria cultures that grown in M9FeS medium were taken as 0h sample, and bacteria incubated with egg white for 6h 12h and 24h were taken as 6,12,24h RNA sample respectively. Three biological replicates were carried out per sample. RNA sample was sequenced with Illumina HiSeq 2000 System. more...

Transcriptome analysis of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium growth in physiological murine bile

(Submitter supplied) Infection with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi in humans causes the systemic, life-threatening disease typhoid fever. In the laboratory, typhoid fever can be modeled through the inoculation of susceptible mice with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The ensuing disease is characterized by systemic dissemination and colonization of many organs, including the liver, spleen and gallbladder. Using this murine model, we previously characterized the interactions between Salmonella Typhimurium and host cells in the gallbladder and showed that this pathogen can successfully invade gallbladder epithelial cells and proliferate. more...

Stress response of Salmonella Typhimurium to acidified nitrite

(Submitter supplied) The antimicrobial action of the curing agent NaNO2, which is added as a preservative to raw meat products, depends on its conversion to nitric oxide and other reactive nitrogen species under acidic conditions. In this study, we applied RNA-sequencing to analyze the acidified NaNO2 shock and adaptive response of Salmonella Typhimurium, a frequent contaminant in raw meat. Upon a 10 minute exposure to 150 mg/l NaNO2 in LB pH 5.5 acidified with lactic acid, genes involved in nitrosative stress protection together with several other stress related genes were induced. more...

Benzoate induced transcriptomic response in Bacillus subtilis

(Submitter supplied) Bacillus subtilis strain AG174 was grown in the presence and absence of benzoate (30 mM). Benzoate was used in order to equalize the external and internal pH. The cultures were grown at external pH 7.0, and the addition of benzoate did not change the external pH. Microarray analysis was performed on cDNA synthesized from bacterial RNA. Real-time PCR of highly up-regulated genes confirmed the results of the microarray. more...
