Influence of exposure time on gene expression of human intestinal epithelial cells exposed to Lactobacillus acidophilus

(Submitter supplied) The Caco-2 epithelial cell line was exposed to the probiotic bacterium L. acidophilus cells for a 1-, 4- or 8-hour exposure time or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for 1 hour to study the impact on gene expression levels. The results indicated the effect of exposure time on gene expression levels.

L. acidophilus NCFM™, B. lactis 420, L. salivarius Ls-33 and E. coli O157:H7 effect on intestinal epithelial cells

(Submitter supplied) Analysis of differentiated Caco-2 intestinal epithelial cell line cocultured with probiotics L. acidophilus NCFM™, B. lactis 420, L. salivarius Ls-33 bacterial cells or treated with cell-free supernatant, and with E. coli O157:H7 cell-free supernatant. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are important genera suggested to be beneficial for human health and E. coli O157:H7 is a pathogen causing hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. more...

Lactobacillus acidophilus induces virus immune defense genes in murine dendritic cells by a TLR-2 dependent mechanism

(Submitter supplied) Lactobacilli are probiotics that, among other health promoting effects, have been ascribed immunostimulating and virus preventive properties. Certain lactobacilli species have been shown to possess strong IL-12 inducing properties. As IL-12 production depends on the up-regulation of type I interferons, we hypothesized that the strong IL-12 inducing capacity of L. acidophilus NCFM in murine bone marrow derived DC is caused by an up-regulation of IFN-β, which subsequently stimulates the induction of IL-12 and the dsRNA binding toll like receptor (TLR)-3. more...

Expression data from IL-1β-stimulated immature human enterocytes treated with probiotic-conditioned media

(Submitter supplied) The conditioned media from Bifidobacterium infantis (BCM) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (LCM) were reported to promote maturation of innate immune response gene expression, which explained the protective effects of probiotics in clinical necrotizing enterocolitis. We used microarray analysis to investigate the expression of genes involved in regulation of BCM and LCM in IL-1β stimulated immature human enterocytes. more...

Temporal gene expression and probiotic attributes of Lactobacillus acidophilus during growth in milk

(Submitter supplied) Lactic acid bacteria have been used as starter strains in the production of fermented dairy products for centuries. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a widely recognized probiotic bacteria commonly added to yogurt and used in dietary supplements. In this study, a whole genome microarray was employed to monitor gene expression of L. acidophilus cells propagated in 11% skim milk (SM) during early, mid and late logarithmic phase, and stationary phase. more...

Zebrafish response to microbiota

(Submitter supplied) Vertebrates are colonized at birth by complex microbial communities (microbiota) that influence diverse aspects of host biology. We have used a functional genomics approach to identify zebrafish genes that are differentially expressed in response to the microbiota. We assessed RNA expression profiles from zebrafish larvae at 6 days post-fertilization (dpf) that were either raised continuously in the absence of any microorganism (germ-free or GF), or raised GF through 3dpf then colonized with a normal zebrafish microbiota (conventionalized or CONVD). more...
