Total RNA sequencing of the liver tissues of Oreochromis niloticus (Nile Tilapia) and of Pundamilia nyerei

(Submitter supplied) Cichlids fishes exhibit extensive phenotypic diversification and speciation. In this study we integrate transcriptomic and proteomic signatures from two cichlids species, identify novel open reading frames (nORFs) and perform evolutionary analysis on these nORF regions. We embark comparative transrcriptomics and proteogenomic analysis of two metabolically active tissues, the testes and liver, of two cichlid species Oreochromis niloticus (Nile tilapia, ON) and Pundamilia nyererei (Makobe Island, PN). more...

Transcriptional profiles associated with Context dependent behavior in Rock X Sand F1 in Lake Malawi Cichlids

(Submitter supplied) We sought to evaluate the brain gene expression profiles of male courtship display. To assess male display and courtship behavior, we designed a courtship preference assay. We evaluated social interactions between males and females using a 40 gallon tank design with a ‘rock’ habitat at one end and ‘sand’ at the other, separated by glass bottom. When parental rock species (Petrotilapia nigra (TaxId 526958), Maylandia zebra (TaxId 106582), Labeotropheus feulliborni) are placed in this tank paradigm, males court females over the rocks. more...

Cellular profiling of a recently-evolved social behavior [spatial transcriptomics]

(Submitter supplied) Social behaviors are essential for survival and reproduction and vary strongly among individuals, species, and heritable brain diseases. The molecular and cellular bases of this variation are poorly resolved, and discovering them is necessary to understand how neural circuit and behavioral functions—and dysfunctions—vary in social contexts. Here we integrate single nucleus RNA-sequencing (snRNA-seq) with comparative genomics and automated behavior analysis to investigate the neurobiology of castle-building, a recently-evolved social, spatial, goal-directed, and repetitive construction behavior in Lake Malawi cichlid fishes. more...
