Identification of constitutively-expressed immune effectors in the house fly (Musca domestica) and the transcription factors that regulate them

(Submitter supplied) In this study we fed groups of female house flies one of two Gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) or control broth and used RNA-seq to determine differential gene expression at 4 hours post-feeding. Flies that ingested P. aeruginosa induced expression of genes encoding digestive proteins in the gut but did not induce AMPs. Flies in all treatment groups constitutively expressed some paralogs of lysozyme and AMP genes at the transcript level.

A Whole Transcriptional Linkage Analysis of Gene Co-Regulation in Insecticide Resistant House Flies, Musca domestica

(Submitter supplied) Illumina HiSeq 2000 RNASeq was conducted on the mRNA fraction of three adult female Musca domestica strains. Two strains were the insecticide susceptible strains CS and aabys, which has five distinct recessive morphological markers, one on each of the five autosomes in M. domestica. The third strain was ALHF, which is a highly insecticide resistant strain obtained in Alabama. The reference transcriptome was generated de novo using Trinity. more...

The effect of osa RNAi with and without infection

(Submitter supplied) Transcriptome profiling of immune-responsive genes in Drosophila melanogaster during Gram-positive bacterial infection and upon silencing of osa was performed. The most highly induced gene in the control set (150071 Valanne I) by Micrococcus luteus infection was CR44404, and its expression is fully dependent on osa expression (as shown in this dataset, 150071 Valanne II). The full transcriptome analysis also indicated that Osa regulates the expression of immune genes by modifying the expression of the Drosophila NF-kappaB factors Relish and Dif.

Transcriptome Differences between Alternative Sex Determining Genotypes in the House Fly, Musca domestica

(Submitter supplied) Sex determination evolves rapidly, often because of turnover of the genes at the top of the pathway. The house fly, Musca domestica, has a multifactorial sex determination system, allowing us to identify the selective forces responsible for the evolutionary turnover of sex determination in action. There is a male determining factor, M, on the Y chromosome (Y^M), which is probably the ancestral state. more...
