Antenatal steroid (AS) adversely affects placental function: A study of molecular effects using micro-array analysis

(Submitter supplied) Antenatal steroids (AS) are used to augment fetal lung maturity and there is a major concern that they impair fetal growth. If delivery is delayed after using AS, placental function and hence fetal growth may be compromised even further. We treated three pairs of pregnant C57/BL mice with AS and studied changes in placental gene expression by microarray analysis, these results were later confirmed by semi quantitative RT-PCR, in situ hybridization and Oligo ApopTaq assay. more...

Placental gene expression in intestinal nematode-infected and protein-deficient mice

(Submitter supplied) Protein deficiency and intestinal parasite infection during pregnancy impair fetal growth through passage of signals from the maternal environment which signal impairment of fetal growth. The placenta is an important regulator of the transfer of these signals through differential expression of key placental genes. We used microarrays to examine placental gene expression responses to maternal protein deficiency (6% vs. more...

IFN-gamma inflammatory effect on bronchial epithelial cells modulated by dexamethasone: time course

Analysis of bronchial epithelial cells treated with interferon (IFN) gamma, or dexamethasone (dex), or both. IFN-gamma plays a role in lung inflammatory responses and corticosteroids such as dex are used as treatments for inflammation. Cells examined 8 or 24 hours after treatment.

Microarray of Dexamethasone-treated primary chondrocytes identifies downstream targets of glucocorticoid signalling

(Submitter supplied) Background: Glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used anti-inflammatory drugs. While useful in clinical practice, patients taking GCs often suffer from skeletal side effects including growth retardation and decreased bone quality in adults. On a physiological level, GCs have been implicated in the regulation of chondrogenesis and osteoblast differentiation, as well as maintaining homeostasis in cartilage and bone. more...

Alveoli septation inhibition and protection

(Submitter supplied) It has been shown that dexamethasone (Dex) impairs the normal lung septation that occurs in the early postnatal period. Treatment with retinoic acid (ATRA) abrogates the effects of Dex. To understand the molecular basis for the Dex indiced inhibition of the formation of the alveoli and the ability of ATRA to prevent the inhibition of septation, gene expression was analyzed in 4-day old mice treated with diluent (control), Dex-treated and ATRA+Dex-treated. more...
