Age and gender effect on brain

Analysis of brain from young (7.5-8.5 months) and old (31-36 months) wildtype males and females. Brains are sexually dimorphic in adults. Results provide insight into the molecular mechanisms associated with brain aging across gender.

Identification of sexually dimorphic gene expression in the brain of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio)

(Submitter supplied) Sexual differentiation in vertebrates is initiated during embryogenesis and leads to the development of individuals into phenotypic males or females. The molecular pathways showing sexual dimorphic patterns have been principally investigated in the gonads. In other organs, much less is known about the gender-associated pattern of gene expression. The brain plays a coordinating role on sexual function in both genders including regulation of reproductive development and maturation through the synthesis of neuropeptide hormones and the regulation of sexual behavior in both males and females. more...

RNA sequencing data of aging zebrafish brain progenitor cells

(Submitter supplied) Our aim in this study was to investigate the gene expression changes through pre-adult to adult, and adult to old age, in zebrafish brains. We isolated the neuronal cells and performed RNA sequencing in 3 months old, 6-8.5 months old, and 26-31 months old zebrafish brains. The cells were enriched in progenitor cell markers, which diminished throughout the aging process.

Expression profiling identifies Sertoli and Leydig cell genes as Fsh targets in adult zebrafish testis

(Submitter supplied) Spermatogonial stem cells are quiescent, undergo self-renewal or differentiating divisions, thereby forming the cellular basis of spermatogenesis. This cellular development is orchestrated by follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), through the production of Sertoli cell-derived factors, and by Leydig cell-released androgens. Here, we investigate the transcriptional events induced by Fsh in a steroid-independent manner on the restart of zebrafish (Danio rerio) spermatogenesis ex vivo, using testis from adult males where type A spermatogonia were enriched by estrogen treatment in vivo. more...

Sex- and gonad-biased gene expression in zebrafish

(Submitter supplied) A microarray study of sex- and gonad-biased gene expression was conducted to determine whether zebrafish demonstrate male-specific patterns consistent with those observed in other animals. We identified a large number of genes (5899) demonstrating statistical differences in transcript abundance between male and female Danio rerio. All sex-biases in gene expression were due to differences between testis and ovary, although differences between male and female body likely went undetected due to constraints imposed by study design and statistical criteria. more...

Antagonistic regulation of spermatogonial differentiation in zebrafish (Danio rerio) by Igf3 and Amh

(Submitter supplied) Fsh-mediated regulation of zebrafish spermatogenesis includes modulating the expression of testicular growth factors. Here, we study if and how two Sertoli cell-derived Fsh-responsive growth factors, anti-Müllerian hormone (Amh; inhibiting steroidogenesis and germ cell differentiation) and insulin-like growth factor 3 (Igf3; stimulating germ cell differentiation), cooperate in regulating spermatogonial development. more...

EpCAM controls morphogenetic programs during zebrafish pronephros development

(Submitter supplied) Epithelial cell adhesion molecule EpCAM is a transmembrane glycoprotein that is dynamically expressed in human and murine renal epithelia during development. The levels of EpCAM in the renal epithelium are upregulated both during regeneration after ischemia/reperfusion injury and in renal-derived carcinomas. The role of EpCAM in early kidney development, however, has remained unclear. To identify potential programs and signaling pathways that are controlled by EpCAM during pronephros development, we developed a method to study the transcriptomes of specific pronephric segments. more...

Sex blind: bridging the gap between drug exposure and sex-related gene expression in Danio rerio using next-generation sequencing (NGS) data and a literature review to find the missing links in pharmaceutical and environmental toxicology studies

(Submitter supplied) Abstract: The sex of both humans and Danio rerio has previously been shown to affect the way individuals respond to drug exposure. Genes which allow identification of sex in juvenile zebrafish show potential to reveal these confounding variables between sex in toxicological and preclinical trials but the link between these is so far missing. These sex-specific, early expressed genes where expression is not altered by drug exposure must be carefully selected for this purpose. more...
