    Summary
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the centaurin gamma-like family. It mediates anti-apoptotic effects of nerve growth factor by activating nuclear phosphoinositide 3-kinase. It is overexpressed in cancer cells, and promotes cancer cell invasion. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. RefSeqs maintained independently of Annotated Genomes

These reference sequences exist independently of genome builds. Explain

These reference sequences are curated independently of the genome annotation cycle, so their versions may not match the RefSeq versions in the current genome build. Identify version mismatches by comparing the version of the RefSeq in this section to the one reported in Genomic regions, transcripts, and products above.

      Description
Transcript Variant: This variant (1) encodes the longer isoform (PIKE-L). This isoform is thought to participate in the prevention of neuronal apoptosis by enhancing nuclear phosphoinositide 3-kinase activity (PMID:14528310).

      Status: REVIEWED

      Description
Transcript Variant: This variant (2) contains an alternate 5' terminal exon compared to variant 1. This results in a shorter isoform (PIKE-A) with a distinct N-terminus compared to isoform PIKE-L. This isoform is reported to be overexpressed in brain tumors and promote cancer cell invasion (PMID:14761976).
