IFG-1 mediates the antagonistic effects on growth and somatic maintenance by regulating mRNA translation of particular mRNAs based on transcript length.
Title: Life span extension via eIF4G inhibition is mediated by posttranscriptional remodeling of stress response gene expression in C. elegans.
Data suggest that mRNA 5' untranslated regions affect translation initiation through interaction with eIF4E/G in nematodes and raise the issue of whether eIF4E/G-RNA interactions play a role in the translation of other eukaryotic mRNAs.
Title: The nematode eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E/G complex works with a trans-spliced leader stem-loop to enable efficient translation of trimethylguanosine-capped RNAs.
eIF4G isoforms are differentially utilized during oogenesis to regulate germ cell apoptosis. We propose that an alternative mechanism to eIF4G cleavage may be employed in germ cells by changing the availability of the p170 isoform.
