    PurK was previously thought to be the ATPase subunit of phosphoribosylaminoimidazole carboxylase, with catalytic subunit PurE (Tiedeman, 1989). PurK and PurE were previously thought to be two subunits of AIR carboxylase , though more recent studies have shown the enzymes to be subunits of a distinct carboxylase and mutase, respectively .
