    Summary
This gene has 5-exon structure similar to chicken selenoprotein P1 gene (GeneID:431587). These two genes are thought to have arisen by whole genome duplication. This gene encodes a vertebrate-specific selenoprotein that contains a single selenocysteine (Sec) residue compared to 13 Sec residues in chicken selenoprotein P. The exact function of this selenoprotein is not known; however, it is predicted to have a signal peptide, so it is probably secreted like selenoprotein P, and may function as an extracellular antioxidant. Sec is encoded by the UGA codon, which normally signals translation termination. The 3' UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs contain a conserved stem-loop structure, designated the Sec insertion sequence (SECIS) element, that is necessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon, rather than as a stop signal. The mRNA for this selenoprotein contains a single SECIS element. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2018]

RefSeqs maintained independently of Annotated Genomes

These reference sequences exist independently of genome builds. Explain

These reference sequences are curated independently of the genome annotation cycle, so their versions may not match the RefSeq versions in the current genome build. Identify version mismatches by comparing the version of the RefSeq in this section to the one reported in Genomic regions, transcripts, and products above.
