Summary: The gene encodes a gamma-glutamyltransferase (AKA gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, EC 2.3.2.2) that is located in the vacuole and is most active in roots. The encoded enzyme is involved in the initial degradation of glutathione conjugates in this cell compartment. It is also induced by xenobiotics and contributes to xenobiotics metabolism. Note that conflicting nomenclature exists in the literature: At4g29210 is named as GGT3 in Plant J. 2007 Mar 49(5):878-88; At4g29210 is named as GGT4 and At1g69820 as GGT3 in Plant Physiol. 2007 Aug 144(4):1715-32.
