Loss of MAdCAM-1 has beneficial effects regarding the development of NASH - manifested by reduced hepatic oxidative stress and decreased inflammation. In contrast, beta7-Integrin-deficiency results in increased steatohepatitis.

β(7)-Integrin and MAdCAM-1 play opposing roles during the development of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

AEbeta7 is of key relevance for gut trafficking of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) CD8(+) T cells and CD4(+) Th9 cells in vivo and mainly retention might account for this effect. These findings indicate that blockade of alphaEbeta7 in addition to alpha4beta7 may be particularly effective in intestinal disorders with expansion of CD8(+) and Th9 cells such as IBD.

Blockade of αEβ7 integrin suppresses accumulation of CD8(+) and Th9 lymphocytes from patients with IBD in the inflamed gut in vivo.
