    The spotted gar expresses a homolog of human PML isoform 1 (PML-I), that unlike the human gene, encodes an active exonuclease domain. Nonetheless, both gar PML and human PML-I share the evolutionary conserved ability to repress LINE-1 retrotransposons, where human PML-I shuttles to the cytoplasm to promote the proteasome-dependent degradation of LINE-1 ORF1p that in turn inhibits cGAS activity and retrotransposition.
