Definition

Cervical dysplasia is the precursor to cervical cancer. It is caused by the persistent infection of the human papillomavirus (HPV) into the cervical tissue. Affected cells develop morphologic features with immature basaloid- type squamous cells and mitotic figures in the upper half of the cervical epithelium. [from HPO]
