phage holin, lambda family
This HMM represents one of a large number of mutally dissimilar families of phage holins. Holins act against the host cell membrane to allow lytic enzymes of the phage to reach the bacterial cell wall. This family includes the product of the S gene of phage lambda.
lambda family phage holin may function in the transport of murein hydrolases (endolysins) across the cytoplasmic membrane to the cell wall where these enzymes hydrolyze the cell wall polymer as a prelude to cell lysis; similar to Lambdavirus lambda antiholin and Hamiltonella phage lysis protein S
