sulfatase/phosphatase domain-containing protein

This domain is found at the C-terminal end of sulfatases and alkaline phosphatases from bacteria, eukaryotes and archaea, including N-sulphoglucosamine sulphohydrolase from humans (SGSH) and Bifunctional sulfatase/alpha-L-rhamnosidase from Formosa agariphila (P36_S1_25). It shows a four-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet, with four surrounding alpha-helices, followed by a C-terminal extension consisting of a small two-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet [1, 2]. [1]. 31285597. A marine bacterial enzymatic cascade degrades the algal polysaccharide ulvan. Choline sulfatase enzyme C terminal

This domain family is found in bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses, and is approximately 60 amino acids in length. The family is found in association with Pfam:PF00884. There are two completely conserved residues (R and W) that may be functionally important. This family is the C terminal of choline sulfatase, the enzyme responsible for catalysing the conversion of choline-O-sulfate and, at a lower rate, phosphorylcholine, into choline. [1]. 9736747. Presence of a gene encoding choline sulfatase in Sinorhizobium meliloti bet operon: choline-O-sulfate is metabolized into glycine betaine. Osteras M, Boncompagni E, Vincent N, Poggi MC, Le Rudulier D;. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1998;95:11394-11399. (from Pfam)
