WxL domain-containing protein

The WxL motif appears in two or three copies in these bacterial proteins [1] and confers a cell surface localisation function. It seems likely that this region is the cell wall-binding domain of gram-positive bacteria, and may interact with the peptidoglycan [2]. [1]. 16723015. Lactobacillus plantarum gene clusters encoding putative cell-surface protein complexes for carbohydrate utilization are conserved in specific gram-positive bacteria. Siezen R, Boekhorst J, Muscariello L, Molenaar D, Renckens B, Kleerebezem M;. BMC Genomics. 2006;7:126. [2]. 16963569. C-terminal WxL domain mediates cell wall binding in Enterococcus faecalis and other gram-positive bacteria. Brinster S, Furlan S, Serror P;. J Bacteriol. 2007;189:1244-1253. (from Pfam)
