Staphylococcus can survive nitrous oxide exposure from host defense through a response in which L-lactate is excreted in large amounts. Lqo acts in L-lactate consumption after its reuptake.

Malate:quinone oxidoreductase (Mqo); This family consists of several bacterial Malate:quinone oxidoreductase (Mqo) proteins (EC:1.1.99.16). Mqo takes part in the citric acid cycle. It oxidizes L-malate to oxaloacetate and donates electrons to ubiquinone-1 and other artificial acceptors or, via the electron transfer chain, to oxygen. NAD is not an acceptor and the natural direct acceptor for the enzyme is most likely a quinone. The enzyme is therefore called malate:quinone oxidoreductase, abbreviated to Mqo. Mqo is a peripheral membrane protein and can be released from the membrane by addition of chelators.

malate:quinone-oxidoreductase; This membrane-associated enzyme is an alternative to the better-known NAD-dependent malate dehydrogenase as part of the TCA cycle. The reduction of a quinone rather than NAD+ makes the reaction essentially irreversible in the direction of malate oxidation to oxaloacetate. Both forms of malate dehydrogenase are active in E. coli; disruption of this form causes less phenotypic change. In some bacteria, this form is the only or the more important malate dehydrogenase. L-lactate dehydrogenase (quinone), SACOL2623 family; Members of this family, found primarily in the genus Streptococcus, were shown to be L-lactate dehydrogenase (quinone) (Lqo) although they have generally been misannotated as malate dehydrogenase (quinone). Staphylococcus can survive nitrous oxide exposure from host defense through a response in which L-lactate is excreted in large amounts. Lqo acts in L-lactate consumption after its reuptake.

Malate:quinone oxidoreductase (Mqo); This family consists of several bacterial Malate:quinone oxidoreductase (Mqo) proteins (EC:1.1.99.16). Mqo takes part in the citric acid cycle. It oxidizes L-malate to oxaloacetate and donates electrons to ubiquinone-1 and other artificial acceptors or, via the electron transfer chain, to oxygen. NAD is not an acceptor and the natural direct acceptor for the enzyme is most likely a quinone. The enzyme is therefore called malate:quinone oxidoreductase, abbreviated to Mqo. Mqo is a peripheral membrane protein and can be released from the membrane by addition of chelators.

The reduction of a quinone rather than NAD+ makes the reaction essentially irreversible in the direction of malate oxidation to oxaloacetate. Both forms of malate dehydrogenase are active in E. coli; disruption of this form causes less phenotypic change. In some bacteria, this form is the only or the more important malate dehydrogenase.
