MFS proteins facilitate the transport across cytoplasmic or internal membranes of a variety of substrates including ions, sugar phosphates, drugs, neurotransmitters, nucleosides, amino acids, and peptides. Bacterial members function primarily for nutrient uptake, and as drug-efflux pumps to confer antibiotic resistance.
