Proline/betaine transporter of the Major Facilitator Superfamily of transporters
This subfamily is composed of Escherichia coli proline/betaine transporter, also called proline porter II (PPII), and similar proteins. ProP is a proton symporter that senses osmotic shifts and responds by importing osmolytes such as proline, glycine betaine, stachydrine, pipecolic acid, ectoine and taurine. It is both an osmosensor and an osmoregulator which is available to participate early in the bacterial osmoregulatory response. The ProP subfamily belongs to the Metazoan Synaptic Vesicle Glycoprotein 2 (SV2) and related small molecule transporter family (SV2-like) of the Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS) of membrane transport proteins. MFS proteins are thought to function through a single substrate binding site, alternating-access mechanism involving a rocker-switch type of movement.
