This model represents 5-aminolevulinic acid synthase, an enzyme for one of two routes to the heme precursor 5-aminolevulinate. The protein is a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme related to 2-amino-3-ketobutyrate CoA tranferase and 8-amino-7-oxononanoate synthase. This enzyme appears restricted to the alpha Proteobacteria and mitochondrial derivatives. [Biosynthesis of cofactors, prosthetic groups, and carriers, Heme, porphyrin, and cobalamin]
