Liquid-infused structured titanium surfaces for dental implants: antiadhesive mechanism to repel bacterial biofilms

(Submitter supplied) To combat dental implant-associated infections, there is a need for novel materials which effectively inhibit bacterial biofilm formation. In the present study, a titanium surface functionalization based on the “slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces” (SLIPS) principle was analyzed in an oral flow chamber system. The immobilized liquid layer was stable over 13 days of continuous flow. With increasing flow rates, the surface exhibited a significant reduction in attached biofilm of both the oral initial colonizer Streptococcus oralis and an oral multi-species biofilm composed of S. more...

Pyrimidine-diones structure containing small molecule inhibits Streptococcus pneumoniae in-vitro biofilms growth

(Submitter supplied) Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram positive bacterium that causes severe invasive infection such as pneumonia, septicemia, meningitis and otitis media especially in children, the elderly and immune-compromised patients. Pneumococcal colonization and disease is often associated with biofilm formation. Bacteria in biofilms exhibit elevated resistance both to antibiotics and to host defense systems, which often results in persistent and difficult-to-treat infections. more...

Gene expression profiling of Streptococcus mutans in biofilm and planktonic conditions

(Submitter supplied) In vitro comparative transcriptome analysis was carried to determine genes that are differentially expressed in S. mutans biofilm compared with free-living cells. Comparison of Porphyromonas gingivalis W83 gene expression when grown with or without galactose

(Submitter supplied) Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) W83 cultures in early exponential phase were supplemented with 0.1% galactose or vehicle control. The cultures were then permitted to grow anaerobically at 37°C for 3 hours, which corresponds to approximately one doubling of P. gingivalis. At this point, RNA extraction was performed using the cultures, and these samples were processed and submitted for RNA sequencing using an Illumina platform. more...

Polyphosphate affects gene expression and viability of Porphyromonas gingivalis W83

(Submitter supplied) Polyphosphate (polyP) is a ubiquitous and abundant compound found in bacteria, fungi, algae, plant, and animals. Among roles of intracellular polyP in bacteria are resistance and survival in the stationary phase of the growth against stress and stringent condition. Therefore, intracellular polyP is considered as a virulence factor of bacteria. In contrast, exogenous polyP has an antimicrobial activity against a variety of microorganisms. more...
