Coculturing with Streptococcus anginosus alters Staphylococcus aureus transcriptome when exposed to tonsillar cells

(Submitter supplied) Better understanding of S. aureus throat colonization in the presence of other competing/coexisting microbes may provide insight into S. aureus adaptation to the human throat and recurrence of infection. In this work, we explore the responses triggered by the encounter between two common throat bacteria, S. aureus and S. anginosus, in the presence of human tonsillar epithelial cells. We performed an in vitro coculture experiment followed by RNA sequencing. more...

Exploring differentially expressed genes of staphylococcus aureus exposed to human tonsillar cells using RNA sequencing

(Submitter supplied) Nasal colonization is well described; however, we have limited knowledge about S. aureus throat colonization. The main objective of this project was to explore differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in S. aureus throat isolate TR145 exposed for 1 or 3 hours (h) to human tonsil epithelial cells (HTEpiC) by using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and pathway analysis. We have shown the suitability of using HTEpiC as an in vitro model for investigating key determinants in S. more...

Staphylococcus aureus responds to physiologically relevant temperature changes by altering its global transcript and protein profile

(Submitter supplied) Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the anterior nares of about 30-50% of the population. Colonization is most often asymptomatic, however, self-inoculation through inhalation, ingestion, or an open wound, can give rise to potentially fatal infections of the deeper tissues and blood. Like all bacteria, S. aureus is able to sense and respond to environmental cues and modify gene expression to adapt to specific environmental conditions. more...

Global transcriptomic analysis of bacteriophage-host interactions between Kayvirus therapeutic phage and Staphylococcus aureus

(Submitter supplied) We analyzed RNA-Seq data of two Staphylococcus aureus strains, Newman and SH1000, infected by Kayvirus phage K. Staphylococcus virus K is used in the phage therapy, its genome is 148 kb long consisting of dsDNA with long terminal repeats, and encodes 233 ORFs and 4 tRNAs. The sampling times 0, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30 minutes after infection were chosen based on the growth characteristics of the phage K at the two S. more...

Identification of a novel LysR-type transcriptional regulator in Staphylococcus aureus that is crucial for secondary tissue colonization during metastatic bloodstream infection

(Submitter supplied) Purpose: The goal of this study was to identify Staphylococcus aureus genes which are important during establishment of metastatic infections in bloodstream infections. Methods: Pooled mariner transposon mutant libraries were generated as previously described (PMID: 27185949). The libraries were sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform with the transposon-specific oligonucleotide primer Himar1-Seq. more...

The differential gene expressions of rat mucosa colonized with single or multi-species of MRSA or PA were studied using RNA-sequencing of total transcriptome.

(Submitter supplied) The differential gene expressions of rat mucosa colonized with single or multi-species of MRSA or PA were studied using RNA-sequencing of total transcriptome. In multi-species in-vitro biofilms PA partially inhibited SA growth. However, no significant inhibition of MRSA was detected during in-vivo colonization of multi-species in rat bullae. A total of 1797 genes were significantly (p < 0.05) differentially expressed in MRSA or PA or MRSA+PA colonized rat middle ear mucosa with respect to the control. more...

The mutual effect of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus in dual species biofilms as revealed by RNA-Seq

(Submitter supplied) We examined the differential gene expression of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus epidermidis in dual species biofilms. Global transcriptome analysis of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms in response to innate immune cells

(Submitter supplied) S. aureus biofilms are associated with the organism's ability to cause disease. Biofilm associated bacteria must cope with the host's innate immune system. We used commercially available Affymetrix S. aureus GeneChips to compare the gene expression properties of 4 and 6 day established biofilms following short (1 hr)- and long (24 hr)- term exposure to macrophages and neutrophils.
