Acanthamoeba castellanii as a model for unveiling Campylobacter jejuni host-pathogen dynamics

(Submitter supplied) The persistence of Campylobacter jejuni in the natural environment, despite its microaerophilic nature, continues to be a subject of active investigation. Its survival and persistence likely stem from a combination of factors, including interactions with amoebae. C. jejuni transiently interacts with Acanthamoebae and this is thought to provide protection against unfavourable conditions and prime the bacteria for interactions with warm-blooded hosts. more...

Gene expression of Acanthamoeba castellanii under long-term co-culture condition

(Submitter supplied) The gene expression of A. castellanii cultured with low-nutrient medium and heat-killed bacteria for 21 days. The RNA-seq analysis was performed by Illumina HiSeq platform. The treated A. castellanii was compared with amoeba cultured in growth medium.

Campylobacter jejuni interactions with Acanthamoeba castellanii

(Submitter supplied) To investigate the interaction of intra-amoebal C. jejuni with the transient host A. castellanii. We then performed gene expression profiling analysis using data obtained from RNA-seq of control and intra-amoebal C. jejuni.

Legionella pneumophila infection rewires the Acanthamoeba castellanii transcriptome, highlighting a class of sirtuin genes

(Submitter supplied) Through RNA-sequencing we compared A. castellanii infected with wild type L. pneumophila to A. castellanii infected with an isogenic dotA mutant strain, which is unable to replicate intracellularly. We identified clear morphological and transcriptional changes in A. castellanii over the course of infection. Genes differentially expressed during infection fell into fundamental biological processes, such as small GTPase signalling, cytoskeleton dynamics, metabolism and cell proliferation. more...

Symbiont-mediated defense against Legionella pneumophila in amoebae

(Submitter supplied) Legionella pneumophila are important opportunistic pathogens for which environmental reservoirs such as protists are crucial for the infection of humans. Free-living amoebae are considered key hosts providing nutrients and shelter for highly efficient intracellular proliferation of L. pneumophila, which eventually leads to lysis of the amoeba host cell. Yet, the significance of other bacterial players for L. more...

Biphasic metabolism and host interaction of a chlamydial symbiont

(Submitter supplied) Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular bacteria comprising well-known human pathogens and ubiquitous symbionts of protists, which are characterized by a unique developmental cycle. Here we comprehensively analyzed gene expression dynamics of Protochlamydia amoebophila during infection of its Acanthamoeba host by RNA sequencing. This revealed a highly dynamic transcriptional landscape, where major transcriptional shifts are conserved among chlamydial symbionts and pathogens. more...
