Treatment protocol All subjects performed a exercise training consisting of 2 endurance exercise session and 1 resistance exercise session per week. Endurance training consisted of cycling, resistance training of exercises training all major muscle groups, intensities were adapted throughout the training.
Growth protocol 18 healthy middle-aged men (age 59±4 years, body weight 95±11 kg, body mass index 30 ± 4) participated in the study. The study was approved by the medical ethical committee of Maastricht University and all subjects received oral and written information about the experimental procedures and provided written informed consent.
Extracted molecule total RNA
Extraction protocol Percutaneous needle biopsies were taken before and 3 days after the last exercise training bout from the vastus lateralis muscle, using the Bergström technique with suction. After each biopsy, the collected tissue sample was carefully cleared from visible adipose tissue and directly frozen into liquid nitrogen.
Label biotin
Label protocol One hundred nanogram of total RNA was labelled using Ambion WT expression kit (Applied Biosystems, Nieuwekerk a/d IJssel, The Netherlands).
 
Hybridization protocol Hybridization and washing of Affymetrix GeneChip Human Gene 1.1 ST arrays was carried out according to standard Affymetrix protocols (Affymetrix, Santa Clara, CA).
Scan protocol Arrays were scanned on an Affymetrix 3000 7G scanner according to standard protocol.
Data processing Expression estimates were calculated using RMA
