Strains were sparged anaerobicallyin the dark with 95%N2-5%CO2 in SIS medium supplemented with 0.1% yeast extract in the presence of DMSO (0.5% vol/vol), as electron acceptor. When the optical density at 600 nm (OD600) reached approximately 0.4 RNA was isolated from a 50-ml aliquot of the culture.
