Extraction protocol Heads of 15 female offspring were collected and frozen, and RNA was extracted using TRIzol (Invitrogen).

Label protocol Biotinylated cRNA was prepared according to the Affymetrix 3' IVT Express protocol from 100 ng total RNA (Affymetrix Technical Manual, 2008).
 
Hybridization protocol Following fragmentation, 10 ug of cRNA were hybridized for 16 hr at 45C on the Affymetrix Drosophila Genome 2.0 Array. GeneChips were washed and stained in the Affymetrix Fluidics Station 450.
Scan protocol GeneChips were scanned using the Affymetrix GeneChip Scanner 3000.

Data processing The data were analyzed with GeneChip Operating Software version 1.4 using the default MAS 5.0 algorithm settings and global scaling as normalization method. The trimmed mean target intensity of each array was arbitrarily set to 500.
