For total RNA extraction cryopreserved liver tissue samples were homogenized in TRIzol reagent (Invitrogen, San Diego, CA, USA) using pestle and nuclease-free 1,5ml reaction tubes (Ambion). Total RNA was then extracted following the manufacturers guidelines and quality was assessed with the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, USA).
