show Abstracthide Abstract
Aspergillus nomius is a filamentous fungus that is of agricultural and medical importance. It is capable of producing toxic secondary metabolites such as B- and G- aflatoxins and cyclopiazonic acid, and is a known contaminant of Brazil nuts. The Aspergillus nomius genome is approximately 36 Mb and contains an estimated 12,000 genes. It has a known sexual state and a heterothallic (self-infertile) breeding system, but some unique strains contain both mating type genes that allow the fungus to be functionally bisexual. If inter-specific breeding is possible then the presence of bisexual A. nomius can increase the likelihood of novel fungal strains.
