Genes enabling phenotypic plasticity evolve canalized gene expression by their limited associations with transcriptional regulators

(Submitter supplied) Global climate change increasingly polarizes environments, presenting unprecedented challenges to many organisms (Smol, 2012). Polarization occurs not only in the spatial dimension, producing greater desert drought and tropical rainfall, for example, but also in the temporal dimension by making a local environment more variable over time. Many organisms survive these fluctuating environmental conditions by manifesting multiple distinct phenotypes through developmental processes that enable phenotypic plasticity (Pigliucci et al., 2006; Parsons et al., 2011). more...

Profiling microRNA expression in Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) gill and responses to arsenic and hyperosmotic stress

(Submitter supplied) The Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), native to estuarine areas of the Atlantic coast of the United States, has become a valuable ecotoxicological model due to its ability to acclimate to rapid environmental changes and adapt to polluted habitats. Killifish respond to rapid increases in salinity with an immediate change in gene expression, as well as long-term remodeling of the gills. Arsenic, a major environmental toxicant, was previously shown to inhibit the ability of killifish gill to respond to a rapid increase in salinity. more...

Global gene expression analysis of green spotted puffer fish gills in response to environmental calcium changes

(Submitter supplied) This study aims to understand the molecular adaptation mechanisms of fish gills to environmental Ca2+ changes. Using SuperSAGE, we compared the gene expression profiles of T. nigroviridis gills transferred from natural brackish water (10 ppt salinity,2.9 mM Ca2+) to artificial brackish water with control (2.9 mM), low (0.01 mM) or high (10 mM) Ca2+ concentrations for 2 or 12h.

The heat shock response of killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus): candidate gene and heterologous microarray approaches.

(Submitter supplied) Subspecies of the Atlantic killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, differ in their maximum thermal tolerance. To determine whether there is a link between the heat shock response (HSR) and maximum thermal tolerance, we exposed 20ºC acclimated killifish from these subspecies to a 2hr heat shock at 34ºC and examined gene expression during heat shock and recovery using real time quantitative PCR and a heterologous cDNA microarray designed for salmonid fishes. more...

Rapid evolution of phenotypic plasticity and shifting thresholds of genetic assimilation in the nematode Caenorhabditis remanei

(Submitter supplied) Many organisms can acclimate to new environments through phenotypic plasticity, a complex trait that can be heritable, subject to selection, and evolve. However, the rate and genetic basis of plasticity evolution remain largely unknown. We experimentally evolved outbred populations of the nematode Caenorhabditis remanei under an acute heat shock during early larval development. When raised in a non-stressful environment, ancestral populations were highly sensitive to a 36.8°C heat shock and exhibited high mortality. more...
