5 time points of YMC samples were collected across three consecutive cycles for both wt and yaf9W89A strains. Samples WT1-WT5 cover one wt YMC cycle. WT6-WT10 and WT11-WT15 are replicates; Samples W89A16-W89A20 cover one yaf9W89A YMC cycle. W89A21-W89A25 and W89A26-W89A30 are replicates.

Growth protocol |
the chemostat protocal was listed in the method section of the manuscript. Both strains grow initially under high nutrient environment with constant O2 supply until they starve. 6 hours after starvation, low glucose media is slowly added into the vessels. The YMC is recored under nutrient-limiting conditions.
